Have you ever heard of information visualization? Do you know these two are closely tied together? In this seminar, Prof. Zhang will guide us to the world of information visualization starting from the theories and practices in abstract painting. We will discuss the three dimensions of painting, i.e. form, color, and texture, various visual cognition principles, and finally aesthetic compositions used in abstract painting. Prof. Zhang will show us how to bridge visual art with information visualization so that the latter could learn from the former in creating more aesthetic visualizations and thus making the viewers visualizing process a pleasant experience. Kang Zhang is Professor, Associate Department Head, and Director of Visual Computing Lab of Computer Science Department at the University of Texas at Dallas. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Brighton, UK, in 1990. Prof. Zhang’s current research interests are in the areas of information visualization, visual programming and visual languages, and Web engineering. He has published over 160 papers in these areas. He has authored and edited four books. His research has been funded by the UK SERC, Australian Research Council, Sun Microsystems, Texas State, US NSF, and US Department of Education. Prof. Zhang has a passion in visual arts and had won prizes in oil painting and Chinese calligraphy.

During his speech, Dr. Liu will present various useful perspectives of the future networking world from Internet, networking, wireless, wireline and many new trends for the future. With profound knowledge and experience in Asia-Pacific and global marketing, Dr. Liu will also illustrate challenges and opportunities in China Telecom industry. Established in 1988, Huawei leapfrogged from a 7-member team to the largest networking and telecommunications equipment supplier in China, and the Top 3 world leaders in this industry. Dr. Nanjie Liu is now the Managing Director of Business Development Department at Huawei Technologies. Dr. Liu received his doctorate degree of Communication and Networking Engineering in Nanjing Institute of Communication & Engineering (NICE). Having joined Huawei Technologies in 1998, Dr. Liu has also been leader of Huawei's pilot NGN advanced research project; director of the cooperation department; director of the corporate strategy department; managing director of the business development, strategy, and marketing department and CTO of Asia-Pacific in the Global Marketing. He has extensive expertise in fields such as NGN, 3G/4G, NG service network, telecom economy, business model, non-voice-service operation, marketing strategy and planning, emerging business, corporate strategy, and M&A. |
