2005 DALLAS YOUTH SPEECH CONTEST

Sponsors:Texas Dragon Toastmasters Club, Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE), Texas Instruments Chinese Initiative and The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD)

Objective:To promote interest in public speaking and provide an opportunity for youth to enhance their presentation skills by competing.

Eligibility:All students from 1st to 12th graders in coming Fall, 2005.

Participant Group

Group A: Grades 1 & 2 Group B: Grades 3 & 4 Group C: Grades 5 & 6 Group D: Grades 7 & 8 Group E: Grades 9 & 10 Group F: Grades 11 & 12

Date: July 30th , 2005 (Saturday)

Time: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Award: Trophies will be awarded to all winners at the CIE 2005 Annual Convention in Dallas on August 20th, 2005. Detailed information will be announced later.

Timing: Group A, B, & C: 3-4 minutes Group D, E, & F: 5-7 minutes

Topic: CREATE YOUR OWN TOPIC.(NOTE: If you can not think of a topic for your speech, you may choose one from the list below.)

Rules: There will be 2 judges in each group, each presentation will be judged by:

Speech Development (20%)

Structure, organization, and support material Effectiveness (15%)

Achievement of purpose, interest, and reception Speech Value (15%)

Ideas, logic, and original thought Delivery (30%)

Physical: Appearance, eye contact, and body language

Voice: dynamics and volume projection Manner: directness, assurance, and enthusiasm Language (20%)

Appropriateness - to speech, purpose and audience Correctness - grammar, pronunciation, and word selection
