2005 CIE/USA-DFW MathComp & MathFun

MathComp is the mathematics competition held annually in mid-May. It is sponsored by the DFW Chapter of Chinese Institute of Engineers, USA, and the Collin County Community College. The Chinese Initiatives of Texas Instruments has been our major sponsor for many years.

The goal of the competition is to stimulate schoolchildren’s interest in mathematics and to enhance their skills in problem solving. Since its inception in 1990 the number of students participating in MathComp as well as the reputation of the event has been steadily increased over the years. Many students come to this event year after year while first time students found their new experiences interesting and rewarding. This year we had more than 600 attendees participated in the MathComp/MathFun event on May 21st.

MathFun is another part of the event to promote students’ interest in mathematics and problem solving. Instead of taking test in a classroom setting, students are provided with interesting mathematic puzzles and games to challenge their curious minds. For solving the problems students are rewarded with fun gadgets and toys. This year we have several Chinese schools and individuals working with MathFun: Sun Ray Chinese School at Carrollton, Tong Xin Chinese School, Hua-Hsing Chinese School, MathPlus ATS, A+Prep School, MTGK Institute and Mr. Jimmie Ting.

While students are taking the written test, their parents attended a seminar organized by CIE. The seminar was facilitated by Elisa Shen and a group of young talented speakers: Kathleen Chiang, Everett Hollander, Risa Lin, Sophia Lin, and Stephanie Wei. The speakers share their experiences with parents and high school students. This year’s topic of seminar are 1) AP and Honor classes, and what’s the impact to my GPA, 2) How to balance school and personal life, 3) How to deal with parental expectation.
