CIE 2005 Writing Topics:

  1. Division I—elementary grades 1 and 2

Everyone has a favorite food. It might be a delicious, creamy ice cream or Mom’s best meal or cheesy pizza. Write a 250 word essay that tells and describes your favorite food. Give some reasons that explain why it is your favorite food. Other ideas you might want to include are how it became your favorite food and how often you eat it.

  1. Division II—elementary grades 3-5

Pets can be our best friends. But sometimes we do not always get the pet we want. Write a 500 word essay on the following topic: If you could have any animal (including wild animal, reptile, bird or fish) as a pet, what would it be? Give some reasons for your choice. Explain why you think this animal would make a great pet and also why it wouldn’t make a good pet, especially if you choose a wild animal.

  1. Division III—middle school grades 6-8

We all have had something happen to us that taught us a valuable lesson. Write a 750 word essay that tells about a certain incident that happened to you. Describe it in a way that involves at least two of your senses: sight (what you saw), sound (what you heard), touch (what you felt), taste (what you tasted) and smell (what you smelled). If you can, include some dialogue, for example, direct sentences that were said between you and another person. (You would put any dialogue into quotation marks: I said, “Don’t do that!”) After you have told it, then explain the valuable lesson you learned. Make sure that you explain the lesson learned in some detail.

  1. Division IV—high school grades 9-12

No doubt, technological advancements have made life more convenient. Where would we be without our computers, HD flat screen TV, Internet or cell phones? But with all the advantages technology brings, disadvantages prevail as well, and in some cases, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, though we might not want to admit that. Choose what you believe to be the greatest invention in technology and write a 1000 word essay that positions an argument in favor of it. In keeping with a sound argument, include a rebuttal paragraph that shows you understand at least one disadvantage of this invention. Include concrete examples and grounded opinion to support your argument.

  1. s. Grade refers level enrolled in the Sprint semester.
