post event FAQ

Q: How Math Comp winners are placed?
A: Top 10%~15% contestants in each grade are placed as winners. There are 1st, 2nd and 3rd places winners, awarded with trophies. The remaining winners are placed as Honorable Mention, awarded with medals. In case there are ties for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place, we give the same place award and skip the next. For example, if there is a tie for 1st place, there will be two 1st places and no 2nd place

Contestants' rankings were computed in the following order: 1. Total number of correct answers (including tie-breaker questions). 2. If there is a tie in step #1, then the total number of correct answers to tiebreaker questions were looked at next. 3. If there is still a tie after step #2, then students have the same ranking.

Q: What is a tiebreaker question?
A: The more difficult questions in each grade level were used as tiebreaker questions. They are randomly placed in the test paper.

Q: Can I know my child(ren)'s scores?
A: Yes. All individual scores were sent to parents by 4/26 via an automated program. The email address was the one that you provided during the online registration, or the one you wrote down during the walk-in registration. If you did not receive your child(ren)'s score, please send inquiry email to shawn.xiong@verizon.net.

Q: Can I know winners' score?
A: No. It is our policy that we do not share the score of other contestants, including winners. However, you can see the Score Distribution Charts posted on CIE website to find how well you child(ren) did in the contest compared with other contestants.

Q: How can I get a picture of the math comp/math fun event?
A: Event photos is available to view and purchase at Dave Tyler Photography website. Dave Tyler Photography is the official photographer for the CIE Math Comp/Math Fun event. Ordering photos from Dave Tyler Photography is optional. CIE does not make profit from the sales. The link to Dave Tyler Photography www.davetylerphotography.com was posted on CIE website. __Q&A___________________

Q1: What will be the date and time for the event? Where will it be held?
A: The event will be held on Saturday June 7, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Collin County Community College, Spring Creek Campus - 2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75075.
Q2: My child is in 3rd grade. She likes to join the MathComp. Could you let me know how to register?
A: Please register from https://secure.jsohosts.com/cie-dfw/eventregistrationyouthNew.php
Q3: Can a kid participate in CIE Math Contest for a different grade from his?
A: One of our goals is to make the math competition fair for everyone. A student is eligible to participate only in his current grade level from Fall 2007 to Spring 2008.
Q4: If there are more than one kid getting a perfect score, how do you decide who's the winner?
A: Our MathComp planning committee will be developing strategies to break the tie. We have considered tie breaking questions. We will not use time to break the ties.
Q5: Is it available to 8th Graders?
A: It is available for students currently attending grades from 1 to 6 during Fall 2007 to Spring 2008.
Q6: Can a kindergarten kid participate in the 1st grade test?
A: The CIE Math Comp test question sets are designed for grades 1 through 6. There will be no seperate kindergartener test group. However, kindergarten students who have taken some grade 1 math, or who really like to challenge themselves can compete with 1st grade.
Q7: I wonder if we can only attend Math Fun and Parent Seminar and skip Math comp. it is our first time, so we want to warm up this time and try next time.
A: Yes, people can attend Math Fun and Parenting Seminar without Math Comp. They still need to register online and report to the registration desk. We need the head count to plan accordingly. Detailed registration information is as below.

* Online registration by deadline: fee $6. Online registration can be accessed via here.
* Walk-In registration: fee $10, payable cash or check on-site
* Fees applicable to either MathComp or MathFun or both. Parenting seminar is free

Q8: Can you please send me the link to the previous exam questions?
A: You can access the previous exam questions via the link here.
Q9: Why is the registration fee higher this year than in 2007?
A: Based on popular demand, we’re going back to the old way when we would give away a T-Shirt with a nice MathComp logo. Many parents told us their kids< now already in college still treasure and wear that special T-Shirt. Since cost of everything has gotten higher, we try to only add just a few dollars to the registration to recover some of the cost.
Q10: I registered my daughter online. Can I bring $6 the same day ?
A: We will be processing student registration for 300 to 500 participants. To avoid payment at the event, the MathComp/MathFun committee has set up the following procedures.

Please mail a $6 check postmarked by June 1st to Susan Yin . Or, pay $10 at the event. The address for mailing the check is as below.

Q11: We moved to Austin. Do you have something similar in Austin?
A: No. MathComp/MathFun is a yearly local event held in Dallas.

Q12: How is the event date chosen?
A: The event will be held on Saturday June 7, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Collin County Community College, Spring Creek Campus. The event date is decided upon the availability of the facility - MathComp/MathFun event attracts hundreds of parents and children attending the event and we need to find a facility to hold all the participants.

Q13: How do we prepare for the MathComp?
A: MathComp/MathFun is to stimulate school children's interest in mathematics and to enhance their skills in problem solving. It is not to add stress on the children. If you want to get a feeling about the questions, you can access the previous exam questions via the link here. You can find the previous exam questions at the middle section of the page.
